Jaw pain, clenching & grinding

Clenching and grinding can wear teeth down, crack fillings and leave your jaw muscles sore. We find out what's going on and offer custom night guards and, when appropriate, therapeutic botulinum toxin injections.

What it is

Many people clench or grind without realizing it, often during sleep. Signs include morning jaw stiffness, headaches at the temples, flattened or chipped teeth, and sensitive teeth. Problems with the jaw joint (TMJ) can also cause clicking, locking or pain when chewing.

Custom night guards

A guard made to fit your teeth, worn at night, protects them from grinding forces and can ease strain on the jaw muscles.

Therapeutic botulinum toxin

Small doses injected into the jaw muscles relax them, which can reduce the force of clenching and the muscle pain that comes with it. The effect builds over one to two weeks and wears off gradually over a few months. It's one option among several, and we'll talk about whether it suits you.

Who it can help

  • Jaw pain or stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Headaches at the temples
  • Worn, flattened or chipped teeth
  • Fillings that keep cracking
  • Someone hears you grinding at night

Some jaw problems need care from another health professional. If yours does, we'll refer you.

How we approach jaw pain

  1. AssessmentWe examine your teeth, bite, jaw muscles and joints, and ask about your symptoms.
  2. Your optionsThese may include a night guard, habit changes, injections, or a referral.
  3. TreatmentWe make your guard or provide treatment, with clear instructions.
  4. ReviewWe check how you're doing and adjust the plan if needed.

Recovery and aftercare

After injections, avoid rubbing or massaging the area for the rest of the day and follow the written instructions we give you. A small bruise at the injection site is possible. Bring your night guard to check-ups so we can check its fit.

Common questions

Is this the same as cosmetic Botox?

The same type of medication is used, but here it's given to relax the jaw muscles for clenching and pain, not for cosmetic reasons.

Will it change how my face looks?

Relaxing a large jaw muscle can slightly slim the lower face over time. We'll discuss this with you before treatment.

How long does it last?

The effect usually wears off over a few months. If it helps, treatment can be repeated.

Do I still need a night guard?

Often the two are used together. We'll recommend what fits your situation.
